    Background

Regional competences and infrastructures are the key to Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) innovation in the textile & clothing sector.

The need to engage more intensively in innovation to succeed in the global market and the absence of direct competition between local companies drives an increasingly open and collaborative innovation environment in regional textile and clothing industry clusters across Europe. Companies and their regional support organisations concentrate innovation efforts and resources into knowledge, technology or market domains in which the regional cluster has a particularly strong position compared to competitors elsewhere and where attractive growth opportunities exist. This idea of Smart Specialisation has been adopted by EU Regional Policy with the objective of propagating it across Europe and facilitating it by allocating a significant share of the EU regional and structural funds towards this objective.

There is currently a wide gap between European regions that smartly support their local or regional textile innovation communities and those who hardly recognise their existence. Consequently, there is a huge potential to be unlocked.

Since November 2016 RegioTex supports the Thematic Partnership on Textile Innovation launched as part of the EU Smart Specialisation Platform on Industrial Modernisation.

    Objectives

To enable Textile & Clothing SME’s to invest more in innovation, to become more competitive and create high-value added jobs we need:

    • More and stronger textile innovation clusters across Europe
    • More investment in open textile technology infrastructure (technology centres, pilot plants, design and maker labs)
    • More innovation business support services (coaching, technology scouting, financing, IPR, business start-up & incubation)
    • Better exploitation of Smart Specialisation policies and related structural funds

RegioTex will work towards creating a virtuous circle of stronger regional innovation textile innovation infrastructures, driving better industrial innovation performance, enabling stronger industrial investment, job creation and re-investment into the regional innovation infrastructure.
