ITM: Carbon Fiber Laboratory of the Research Center Carbon Fibers Opened in Dresden

On November 2nd 2018, a new laboratory for carbon fibers as part of the Research Center Carbon Fibers (RCCF) was opened with an official ceremony at TU Dresden. The RCCF is a joint scientific institution founded by the Institute of Lightweight Engineering and Polymer Technology (ILK) and the Institute of Textile Machinery and High Performance Material Technology (ITM).

It aims at thoroughly investigating carbon fibers – from fiber raw material to final components – and discovering novel properties and potential applications. By means of a state-of-the-art, unique plant, RCCF scientists are able to research the fundamentals of tailored carbon fibers and tap their enormous innovation potential under clean-room conditions. Researchers use individual plant modules for stabilization and carbonization based on an industry-oriented furnace design in addition to individually adjustable parameter combinations. Due to their extraordinary degree of purity, these carbon fibers are suitable for use in aerospace and automotive engineering.
