Textile ETP on Tour visits textile innovations in Northern France
To provide our members with first-hand insights into cutting-edge research, technologies, and sustainable innovations, we launched ‘Textile ETP on Tour’, an exclusive members-only initiative designed to showcase pioneering developments in textile science and technology. For the first edition on 19-20 March 2025, we organised an itinerary in Roubaix and Tourcoing, France, where we visited some of the most innovative textile companies and research centres in Europe.
Our first stop of the first day was PEIGNAGE DUMORTIER, a leader in fibre processing, where we explored their state-of-the-art techniques in carding, combing, and fiber cracking for technical, recycled, and natural fibres. This visit provided valuable insights into how sustainable and high-performance fibres are processed for various industrial applications. Next, we headed to Union Textile de Tourcoing (UTT), a renowned name in spinning and yarn dyeing for industrial and technical textiles. UTT’s expertise in precision dyeing and specialised spinning processes is instrumental in pushing the boundaries of textile innovation. Our morning concluded with a visit to IMATTEC SAS, a specialist in advanced fibrous materials and technical textile solutions. Here, we delved into the latest developments in high-performance fibers designed for demanding applications in multiple sectors.
The afternoon took us to CETI (Centre Européen des Textiles Innovants), a leading European platform for textile material experimentation and industrialisation. At CETI, we explored their state-of-the-art research and development facilities, where ground-breaking work is being done to enhance textile performance and sustainability. We observed their melt spinning and wet spinning machines in action, which play a crucial role in producing advanced fibres for technical and industrial applications. The visit provided valuable insights into how CETI collaborates with industry leaders to push the boundaries of textile innovation, from fibre development to large-scale production solutions. Following the visit, we attended a workshop on technical textiles and fibre recycling at the facilities of EuraMaterials. The session featured insights from experts including Manisha Marival (CETI), Lien Van der Schueren (Centexbel), Ariadna Detrell (Tèxtils.CAT), and Jeanne Meillier (EuraMaterials), who shared their expertise on sustainable textile innovations and circular economy practices.
The second day took us to ENSAIT (École Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Industries Textiles), one of France’s premier engineering schools specialising in textile sciences and home to Gemtex, a research laboratory dedicated to textile innovation. Our tour of ENSAIT began with an exploration of their state-of-the-art laboratories. We had the opportunity to witness research into melt spinning, biosolvable polymer filaments, and fully biobased flame-retardant yarns. In the weaving prototype room, we observed fabric production tailored for defence applications, showcasing the intricate processes involved in developing durable and functional textiles. The knitting lab, equipped with advanced circular and flat knitting machines, demonstrated the growing role of smart textiles in wearable technology, sports, and civil protection. We also had the privilege of visiting ENSAIT’s testing labs, spinning lab, and conception room, where innovative smart textile prototypes are being designed for real-world applications in fields such as emergency response and personal protection. Beyond the technical insights, we explored ENSAIT’s stunning 19th-century building and its historic library, highlighting the deep-rooted legacy of textile education and research in this area of France.
