Preparing the Smart Textile Sector for a Sustainable Future with Practical Learning on EU Regulations
The SusTEX project, formally known as Sustainable Smart Textiles for Industry and Education, has officially launched to help companies and learners navigate the growing number of sustainability requirements shaping the smart textile field.
This 12-month project, funded with a €60,000 grant under the Erasmus+ Small-scale Partnerships in Vocational Education and Training (KA210-VET), aims to turn complex EU sustainability frameworks into clear, practical knowledge for both industry professionals and educational institutions.
As policies such as the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), the Digital Product Passport (DPP) and the European Green Deal reshape the textile sector, smart textile companies face new questions about traceability, product data, durability, repairability and the integration of electronic components. SMEs in particular often lack the time and resources to interpret these rules for daily practice, while vocational curricula are still catching up with the fundamentals of smart textiles. SusTEX's primary objectives are to map the real sustainability challenges of the sector, translate EU regulations into accessible learning content, and connect industry needs with education.
The project, coordinated by Smart-Tex Netzwerk (Germany) together with TITERA (Slovenia) and Textile ETP, builds directly on the successful SmartINNO project. It will create a set of modular learning materials covering circularity, eco-design, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), ESPR, DPP and other emerging EU requirements. Designed to be explored in any order, the modules will be a valuable resource for industry professionals, SMEs, VET students, teachers and trainers, and will link to existing SmartINNO materials for those who want to go deeper.
"Our goal is to give the smart textile industry fast, practical answers to the challenges new legislation brings, while bringing this knowledge into the classroom. By building on SmartINNO and working closely with industry experts, we ensure our materials reflect what companies really need today." highlights the consortium.
Key Activities include:
An expert consultation with industry and education professionals across Europe to identify the key sustainability topics, regulatory requirements and challenges for smart textiles.
Development of four modular PDFs, each supported by a short explainer video, validated by industry and education experts and freely available online.
Two online webinars connecting industry and education stakeholders to discuss the materials and real implementation challenges.
This collaborative initiative will result in openly accessible, expert-validated learning resources that companies can use for internal training and upskilling, and that VET institutions can integrate into textile programmes. By aligning sustainability knowledge with market needs, SusTEX seeks to strengthen regulatory readiness and the competitiveness of Europe's smart textile sector.
