Textile sustainability through product regulation ignores half of our brain

‎Regularly, our Secretary General Lutz Walter shares his insights and knowledge through his blogposts, covering a wide range of topics related to textile sustainability and innovation. Follow his blog to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges that the textile industry is facing today.

"There is just too much art, creativity, culture, tradition, craftsmanship, diversity and community linked to this sector of the economy that cannot be made subject to purely quantitative measures or regulatory standards. The emotional or cultural significance of textile materials and garments cannot be expressed or compressed into a digital product passport".

In his latest blog post, our Secretary General Lutz Walter explores the growing gap between regulation and the creative essence of fashion. While acknowledging that some regulation is essential to address the environmental and social challenges in the textile sector, Lutz Walter cautions against an overly technocratic approach. He draws on neuroscience to illustrate how fashion design and consumption are deeply emotional and creative processes, not easily governed by rigid product rules and data reporting.
